The puppy dummy got your dog retrieving. Now what?

The jump from a puppy dummy straight to a 1lb canvas is bigger than it looks. The weight is different, the size is different, and for a young dog that's just starting to get confident, that gap can knock things back. A retrieve that was looking good suddenly falls apart - the dog drops it early, struggles with the carry, or loses interest entirely. It's not the dog. The weight just got ahead of where it was in training.

The ½lb canvas dummy is the step in between. Heavier and larger than the puppy dummy, lighter and shorter than the 1lb. It builds the carry, the grip and the delivery habit at a weight the dog can manage properly - so when the 1lb arrives, it's not a shock. It's the next logical thing.

The colour is the training decision

Same principle as the dummy balls - the colour you pick changes what you're training, not just what it looks like. Dogs don't see colour the way we do. They work in the blue-yellow spectrum, which means some colours give them a clear visual advantage and others effectively disappear against natural ground. Pick based on what you want the dog doing.

Sight - dog can see these clearly at range

Good for early retrieve work and any session where you want the dog tracking the dummy clearly from throw to retrieve:

• Baby Blue - clean contrast against grass and ground, good for introducing canvas retrieve work
• Green - visible in open ground, reliable for standard retrieve sessions

Marking - high visibility, built for marked retrieves

The dog can distinguish these colours well at distance. Use them when you're drilling marked retrieves - the dog needs to mark where the dummy lands, hold that mark while moving, and drive accurately to the right spot. The two-tone variants maximise contrast on the fall:

• Blue - strong single-colour visibility, solid marking work
• White - high contrast in most light conditions, particularly useful on darker ground or overcast days
• Pink - stands out clearly from natural backgrounds, reliable for marking drills
• Lilac - visible to the dog, good marking contrast against green ground
• Black - works well against pale or sandy ground, clear contrast for marking
• Black/White (two-tone) - maximum contrast, one of the clearest marks in varied light conditions
• Pink/Baby Blue (two-tone) - high-contrast two-tone for marked retrieve work

Hunting and nose work - colours that fade for the dog

Red and orange sit in a wavelength range dogs struggle to distinguish from surrounding greens and browns. At range against natural ground they disappear - the dog can't mark them reliably. That's the point. Throw one into light cover and the dog has to get its head down and hunt rather than drive straight to a visual mark:

• Red - hunting and nose work, low visual contrast for the dog at range
• Orange - hunting and nose work, fades into natural backgrounds

FLIGHT prints - game bird colouring for hunting and transition work

The in-between dummy is worth knowing about - it carries the weight of a 1lb in the body of a ½lb. Useful if your dog is carrying the ½lb well but isn't physically ready for the full 1lb size yet. The weight conditioning happens before the size step up.
