This is the one most dogs spend their working life training with.

Not the puppy dummy, not the ½lb - those are the stepping stones. The 1lb canvas dummy is the training standard. It's the weight a dog needs to be carrying confidently before it steps into a working test, a field trial, or a walked-up day. It sits at approximately the weight of a pheasant or a mallard in the hand, which is the point. Once a dog is retrieving a 1lb dummy cleanly - marked, blind, directional, in water - it's ready for the real thing.

That's not a marketing line, that's the brief this dummy was built to. The toggle means you can get distance without a launcher. The sealed interior means it floats for water work. The 1lb weight means the dog is working the carry properly - building the mouth strength, the grip and the drive that a lighter dummy doesn't demand.

Most handlers use this dummy more than anything else in their kit bag. Which is why the colour choice matters more than it might seem.

The colour is the training decision

Same principle throughout the range - the colour you pick determines what the dog is actually doing. Dogs see in the blue-yellow spectrum. Some colours give them a clear visual advantage at range; others disappear into natural ground. Pick based on what you want trained.

Sight - dog can see these clearly at range

Use these when you want the dog tracking the dummy visually - for early retrieve confidence, straightforward marked retrieves, or any session where the retrieve itself is the focus rather than the hunt:

• Baby Blue - clean contrast against grass and typical ground, reliable for sight work
• Green - visible to the dog in open ground, solid for standard retrieve sessions

Marking - built to be seen on the fall

These colours sit clearly within the dog's visible spectrum at distance. Use them for marked retrieve drilling - the dog picks the dummy up visually in flight, holds the mark, and drives to the right spot:

• Blue - strong single-colour visibility, dependable for marking work
• White (canvas) - maximum contrast in most light conditions, particularly effective on overcast days or against darker ground
• Pink - clear against natural backgrounds, reliable marking dummy
• Lilac - visible to the dog, good contrast against green ground
• Black - works well against pale, sandy or open ground
• Black/White (two-tone) - maximum contrast, one of the clearest marks available in varied light
• Pink/Baby Blue (two-tone) - high-contrast two-tone for marked retrieve work

Hunting and nose work - colours that fade for the dog

Red and orange don't register clearly in a dog's colour range. Against natural grass and ground cover they become muddy and indistinct - the dog can't mark them reliably at range. That's the training tool for hunting work. The dog has to hunt by nose rather than drive to a visual mark:

• Red - hunting, nose work, cover search
• Orange - hunting, nose work, low visual contrast at range

BIRD prints - game realism for hunting and transition

The FLIGHT range uses high-definition feather prints that mimic real game bird colouring. Earth tones that sit in cover the way a real bird would - the dog can't pick it out visually, it has to work the scent. Good for dogs being introduced to game, and for hunting pattern work in light cover:

• Cock Pheasant - hunting, cover search, game introduction
• Hen Pheasant - hunting, earth-tone colouring, nose-led retrieves
• Mallard - hunting, darker colouring, cover and water work
• Partridge - hunting, mottled ground cover pattern

White Full PVC - for muddy conditions

One wipe-clean option in the range. The Full PVC White is the same 1lb weight and white colouring as the canvas equivalent, but with a fully wipe-clean PVC surface - useful for sessions in heavy mud when you want a dummy you can clean down in seconds rather than waiting for canvas to dry out.

Important: the Full PVC White does not float. Keep it for land work only. For water retrieves, use the canvas White instead.

Once the 1lb is carrying cleanly - confident hold, good delivery, no dropping - the dog is at the training standard for working tests, field trials and the shooting field. The 2lb and 3lb build strength and stamina beyond that, but this is the weight most dogs train at for life.
