The colour is the training decision

All four variants are two-tone. But contrast for the handler and contrast for the dog are two different things. Dogs are dichromats - they see in the blue-yellow spectrum and cannot distinguish red or green from shades of brown and grey. Some of these colours stand out clearly for the dog at range; others fade into natural ground and ask the dog to work harder for the mark. That's not a flaw. It's a training variable.

• White/Black - maximum contrast in almost any conditions; clean, sharp mark on grass, cover, or pale ground. The easiest of the four for the dog to track in flight and mark on the fall. Use this for early marking work and building retrieve confidence.
• White/Blue - strong two-tone visibility; blue sits clearly in the dog's colour spectrum, white amplifies it at range. A reliable marking dummy across most ground and light conditions.
• Black/Orange - looks high-contrast to the human eye. For the dog, orange sits in a wavelength it struggles to distinguish from natural greens and browns - and black doesn't compensate at distance the way white does. Harder than it looks. Use this when you want the dog working to maintain the mark rather than driving straight to a visual.
• White/Green - the most challenging of the four. Green falls in the range dogs cannot distinguish well from grey and brown, so it fades into natural ground quickly after the fall. The white gives you a decent sighting throw, but the dog is hunting rather than marking once it lands. Use this for pushing a dog that's become too reliant on easy visual marks - or for introducing hunting work alongside retrieve training.
